To assess whether following a Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) improves atherothrombosis biomarkers in high cardiovascular risk individuals.
In 358 random volunteers from the PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea trial, the 1-year effects on atherothrombosis markers of an intervention with MedDiet, enriched with virgin olive oil (MedDiet-VOO; n = 120) or nuts (MedDiet-Nuts; n = 119) versus a low-fat control diet (n = 119), and whether large increments in MedDiet adherence (?3 score points, versus compliance decreases) and intake changes in key food items are associated with 1-year differences in biomarkers. Differences are observed between 1-year changes in the MedDiet-VOO intervention and control diet on the activity of platelet activating factor acetylhydrolase in high-density lipoproteins (HDLs) (+7.5% [95% confidence interval 0.17; 14.8]) and HDL-bound α-antitrypsin levels (-6.1% [-11.8; -0.29]), and between the MedDiet-Nuts intervention and the control arm on non-esterified fatty acid concentrations (-9.3% [-18.1; -0.53]). Large MedDiet adherence increments are associated with less fibrinogen (-9.5% [-18.3; -0.60]) and non-esterified fatty acid concentrations (-16.7% [-31.7; -1.74]). Increases in nut, fruit, vegetable, and fatty fish consumption, and decreases in processed meat intake are linked to enhancements in biomarkers.

MedDiet improves atherothrombosis biomarkers in high cardiovascular risk individuals.A gene cluster encoding a cryptic trans-acyl transferase polyketide synthase (PKS) was identified in the genomes of Burkholderia gladioli BCC0238 and BCC1622, both isolated from the lungs of cystic fibrosis patients. Bioinfomatics analyses indicated the PKS assembles a novel member of the glutarimide class of antibiotics, hitherto only isolated from Streptomyces species. Herein, we report a biochemical and spectroscopic characterization of a Mo-nitrogenase variant expressed in an Azotobacter vinelandii strain containing a deletion of nifV, the gene encoding the homocitrate synthase. Designated NifDKCit , the catalytic component of this Mo-nitrogenase variant contains a citrate-substituted cofactor analogue. Activity analysis of NifDKCit reveals a shift of CO reduction from H2 evolution toward hydrocarbon formation and an opposite shift of N2 reduction from NH3 formation toward H2 evolution. Consistent with a shift in the Mo K-edge energy of NifDKCit relative to that of its wild-type counterpart, EPR analysis demonstrates a broadening of the line-shape and a decrease in the intensity of the cofactor-originated S=3/2 signal, suggesting a change in the spin properties of the cofactor upon citrate substitution. To determine seizure prevalence in dogs and cats with idiopathic internal hydrocephalus, to identify risk factors for seizure development, and to determine seizure prevalence in a 2-year period after ventriculo-peritoneal shunting (VPS).
Records and MRIs of 197 animals from 2001 to December 2019 were investigated. A total of 121 animals (98 dogs and 23 cats) were included in the study.
A retrospective multicenter case cohort study was conducted. Databases were searched for dogs and cats with internal hydrocephalus. MRI and CSF examinations were evaluated for signs of additional underlying disorders. Prevalence of seizures was estimated for animals showing only hydrocephalus internus. Neuropsychological measures are predictors of IADL ratings. The aims of the present study were to measure ability to perform IADL in patients with cancer and to explore the relationship between IADL and neuropsychological functioning.
We evaluated IADL in 182 patients with four different types of cancer (thyroid, colorectal, breast and prostate cancer) and examined the relationship between IADL and neuropsychological functioning 6months after chemotherapy treatment.
Our results showed that patients with breast cancer had significantly greater difficulty in performing IADL compared to patients with other types of cancer. There were no differences in IADL performance among the other three study groups. In addition, we found that neuropsychological score was a predictor of IADL; the greater the patients' disability, the lower their performance on neuropsychological measures.
